Polymer Clay Donut Tutorial Sheet - Free PDF Download!

Check out this FREE Step by Step Donut Pendant Tutorial!

To get started all you need are the following materials:
  • Ecru Clay (or make your own donut colour - see pdf instructions for colours needed)
  • Pink, Yellow or Brown clay to represent the icing
  • Various clay colours for sprinkles
  • A Sewing Pin or toothpick
  • A Straw
  • An old toothbrush for texture
  • Metal Hook or Eye Pin
  • Jump Ring
  • Necklace or Key Ring
  • Baking Paper
  • Oven

Steps:
1.  Clean your workspace and spread out a A3 piece of baking paper.
Prepare all your clay and tools ready to get started.

2.  Start by mixing up a 'Donut' colour or use Ecru Clay by Premo.

3.  Condition and roll your clay in your hand so that its nice and soft.  This prevents any cracking when it's baked.
Roll into a ball and press lightly to form something that resembles a slightly squashed ball however not too much as you still need to add the icing and press that down as well.

4.  Choose your icing colour.  You will only require a small amount.
Condition your icing so that it is soft.
Then roll it into a ball and press it down so that it resembles a disc.
Place it lightly over your donut shape to check that it's the right size.
When it is the right size then pat it down firmly.

5.  Use a straw to create a hole in the centre of the donut.
(Hint:  You can also use the straw to cut out three pieces of clay on the side of the donut if you wish to make it look like a bite mark!  Then use your pin to texture the bite mark.)

6.  To make the sprinkles roll out very thin snakes of coloured clay.
You can use a pin, toothpick or blade to cut out the sprinkles and add them to the icing.
Pat the sprinkles down lightly.

7.  Insert your hook/pin into the top of the donut.
I like to use stainless steel hooks as they do not tarnish.

8.  If you wish to add texture to your donut part then add it with a toothbrush once you have finished.
(Hint: If you handle the donut after adding the texture your fingers will remove the texture!)

9.  Preheat your oven to 130 degrees celsius.   For best results, please check the instructions on the brand of clay you are using.
For my miniatures I always bake my Premo clay on 130 degrees celsius for 30 minutes.

10.  Once baked allow your creation to completely cool.
Add a jumpring to the hook and and then to a necklace or keyring.  Hooray!
